‘Kunnen we afspreken?’ Ik luister naar de zware mannenstem. ‘Ik bedoel, ik weet niet of jij eh… werkt.’ Even ben ik bang dat hij zal ophangen, maar zijn ademhaling klinkt nog in de hoorn. Giovanni, want zo heet hij, heeft ‘huidhonger’. In zijn auto rondrijden en iemand oppikken wil hij niet. Reageren op een advertentie durft hij niet. ‘Je weet nooit wie erachter zit, hé? Jij bestaat.’ Twee dagen later controleer ik op de afgesproken plek twee keer het in mijn navigatie ingevoerde adres. Een verlaten restaurant. Alles zit potdicht. Net wanneer ik mijn handen tegen de etalageruit wil drukken, zwaait er een man naar me.
