What exactly is toxic positivity and how could it affect you? Toxic positivity is the belief that no matter how dire or difficult a situation is, people should maintain a positive mindset. This attitude doesn't just stress the importance of optimism, it minimizes and denies any trace of human emotions that aren't strictly happy or positive. Toxic positivity actually invalidates someone else’s feelings. An example of toxic positivity is someone telling you just to chin up. Toxic positivity is meant to try to make a bad situation better, but what it really does is make someone feel that they must hide their feelings or feel guilty for feeling them. Chances are that you have experienced toxic positivity in your own life. Remember that your feelings are valid, and it’s important for you to express them.
